I updated this server from Debian 5.0 lenny to Debian 6.0 squeeze.

Although better to wait for the stable release of Debian 6.0 squeeze, I updated the operating system of this server.

Unable to install grub on lenny, I had to edit /etc/initramfs-tools/initramfs.conf for lilo can read. The edit is like this. (cf. 4.1.6. Prepare initramfs for LILO.)

20c20

< MODULES=most

> MODULES=dep

But the upgrade is succeeded across the board with seeing the Japanese version of Chapter 4. Upgrades from previous releases, although I’m impressed these points.

Gnome desktop and a trouble with networking.

I mainly use this server as a router and as a server. But for operating with Japanese script, I install Gnome desktop. When I upgraded it, the Gnome desktop is removed. So I have to reinstall it.

Network Manager is automatically installed then. But I don’t feel it good. This server is also a router. But the Network Manager isn’t good for me. I use the configuration of /etc/network/interfaces and /etc/ppp/.

When I download the IMAP folders (for saving mails) from my account on this server, I got this warning:

Filesystem notification initialization error — contact your mail administrator (check for configuration errors with the FAM/Gamin library)

I wondered what kind of error it is. But seeing rjbs’s rubric: mutt problems after debian upgrade, I installed fam. My imap server seems to want to install FAM or Gamin.

# aptitude install fam
